Students are evaluated continuously by the coaching team. Advancement is based on demonstrated skills, competition readiness, performance, professionalism and leadership — never automatically by grade, age, number of semesters or years enrolled.

Tournaments
Competition Is Part of the Journey
Because Washington Debate Academy is built around a competitive model, tournaments are an important part of the student experience. They give students the opportunity to apply what they learn in class, test their skills in real rounds, receive meaningful feedback, and grow through experience.
Tournament participation is open to students at every academy level. Students do not need to wait until they feel “fully ready” to compete. In fact, beginning tournament experience earlier can help accelerate confidence, skill development and competitive maturity.
Throughout the academic year, the academy will identify several tournament opportunities for students to participate in. Tournament participation is optional, and tournament registration and related expenses are separate from annual tuition.
